Characters: Yuma Tsukumo, Kotori Mizuki
Synopsis: While on a Valentine's Day date, Kotori takes Yuma to see the Heartland Memorial she had made.

Waking up on Valentine's Day morning, Kotori rubbed the sleep from her eyes before glancing over at Yuma who was asleep next to her.
She had found through the occasional times they had shared a bed together that Yuma really liked to sprawl out in his sleep and today was no different, waking up to him laying face down, sprawled out with one arm draped over her and with a leg hanging over the edge of the bed. Although this often left little room for her in such a small bed, part of her couldn't help but be amused at some of the bizarre sleeping positions she'd woken up to find him in.
Sitting up slowly, it was enough to disturb Yuma, who grumbled while removing his arm from her and instead tucking it under the pillow in an effort to keep cosy. This told Kotori that he was at least half awake.
She watched him for a moment before speaking up.

"Yuma. It's time to get up."

There was more grumbling as Yuma nuzzled his head further into the pillow. Kotori could only just make out the muffled words "just five more minutes."
But that, in Yuma terms, meant at least another hour and Kotori was eager to start their Valentine's Day.
She looked mischievously at him, a plan coming to mind, before she quickly grabbed the blankets and took them with her as she jumped off the bed. Instant cold hit Yuma as he curled up into a ball to try and keep warm.

"Kotori, it's cooooold....!" he moaned. She just giggled playfully from across the room.

"If you want the covers back, you're going to have to get them!"

Sighing, he sat up, looking tiredly over at her. "It's too early for thiiiis!"

"Giving up on the challenge already? I'm disappointed, Yuma!"

The moment the word 'challenge' escaped Kotori's mouth, Yuma looked over at her with a little more determination, grinning slightly.

"Well if that's how it is, then I'll take up that challenge!!"

Leaping off the bed, Yuma dove after Kotori as she ran to avoid him, with the blankets in her arms. This resulted in a a minute of Yuma trying to catch her and Kotori dodging, until Yuma leapt and was able to finally catch her and knock her playfully down onto the bed. Looking down at her, he gave her a huge grin.

"I win!"

"No you don't." Kotori replied back, smiling, before tapping the top of Yuma's nose cheerfully. "Because now you're awake and can help me with breakfast."

Yuma paused for a moment, then sighed.
He'd been duped!

--------------------------------------------------

Despite the cold temperature throughout the day, Yuma and Kotori made the most of their Valentine's date together. They visited the museum in the morning (it had become one of their favourite places to visit), had lunch at a cafe in the plaza and saw a movie in the afternoon.
In the early evening as dusk began to set in, the two of them decided to take a walk in the park, hand-in-hand. After a while, they decided to sit down on a bench, where Kotori handed over the chocolate truffles she had made Yuma. They were set neatly in a heart-shaped box, with a label on the lid which read 'duel chocolates'.
Yuma really loved that. Kotori was glad that she took Akae's advice of adding it.

"Man, these are really good!!" Yuma exclaimed, before he picked another truffle up to eat it.

"I'm really glad you like them!" Kotori replied with a smile. "It was your grandmother that actually gave me the recipe for them. She said she once gave the same recipe to your mother too, as a Valentine's gift for your dad when they were first dating."

"Wow, really?!" Yuma laughed a little. "I bet my dad liked them a lot too!"

As Yuma enjoyed the chocolates, Kotori looked up at the darkening sky for a moment, before turning back to him.

"Hey, Yuma. What time are you going to be heading back to the Academy?"

"Hm? I'm planning to get the last train back so I can stay here for as long as I can!"

"I see..." Kotori seemed to go quiet for a moment, as she thought to herself, before addressing Yuma again.
"Yuma. There's something I want to show you."

"Show me?"

Kotori nodded. "I debated whether to show it to you today, but, I'd like you to see it. It's something I worked on this week. It'd be better for us to see it while there's still some daylight."

Yuma was puzzled, but very curious. "Then lets go and see it!"

-------------------------------------------------

Yuma was surprised when Kotori had led him to where SAI was located, but instead of leading him to the main building, she lead him to the side, where the large Spirit House was located. Around the spirit house was a small patch of grass and a few trees. Kotori lead him to the centre tree, which had a small flowerbed at the bottom of it. Once they were close enough, Yuma could see something among the flowers. It was a plaque of wood which was brightly decorated, but more distinctively were the words that were carved into the wood.
'HEARTLAND'
Once they were stood before the tree, Kotori crouched down, brushing her hand over the plaque.

"I bumped into Juudai-san early last week as I left for school. He asked how we were doing. Somehow the conversation got onto how difficult it's been to not really have much closure on what happened. He came by our apartment that night with that plaque of wood. He told me to decorate it how I wished and that I could use it as a memorial to place here on SAI's grounds. We were originally going to place it in the Spirit House, but we figured outside it would be better... because then we have access to it whenever we wish to."

Yuma was speechless. This hadn't been what he was expecting. There was a mixture of emotions welling up in him; Sadness, regret, guilt but also... gratefulness... that Kotori went and set this up for them all... and to Juudai who suggested it and gave them a place for such a memorial.
Tears welled up in his eyes, but he wiped them away before they got the chance to fall.
Kotori silently looked up at Yuma, tears forming a little in her own eyes. She hadn't wanted to end their date on such a bitter-sweet note, but she really wanted Yuma to see this. She didn't get the chance to show him the day before, as he arrived into Domino from the Academy rather late on.

Standing up, she carefully took Yuma's hand in her own, before leaning into him a little.

"No matter what happens, or what we have to face from this point on, we'll face it together. Always."

For a moment, Yuma stood still, with his eyes fixed on the memorial, before he gradually wrapped his arms around Kotori, pulling her into a firm hug. Kotori responded by holding him too, before the both of them just fell to their knees, locked in an emotional embrace.
As Kotori rested her head on Yuma's shoulder, she quietly whispered to him.

"We'll be okay."

Even though they knew that they would probably never have complete closure, the memorial was at least a way for them to pay their respects to everyone back in their home town; their friends, their family, their neighbours and would let them be able to carry on with their own lives here in Domino City.
As far as Yuma was concerned, as long as his family were here, as long as they were carrying on living their lives, then whoever attacked Heartland hadn't won.

And they never would.
