Characters: Yuma Tsukumo, Kotori Mizuki
Synopsis: Yuma becomes frustrated after his first date with Kotori gets de-railed.
Stepping out of the Monorail station in Domino City, Yuma shielded his eyes from the sun beaming down from the almost cloudless sky. It was a wonderful summers day which was as perfect as things could get.
Today was the day he had promised to take Kotori on their first date and he was determined that he was going to make this the best day he could for her.
As he looked around, he soon spotted Kotori waiting for him nearby. She was wearing a white coloured summer dress and a woven summer hat over her head to shield herself from the sun. Her hair was not in it's usual bun and in fact she had chosen to wear her hair down for the day. In her hands she was carrying a wicker basket which had a red and white chequered blanket attached to the top of it.
When she saw Yuma, she smiled and waved to him, before making her way over. She stopped when he reached him and gave him a cheerful smile.
"Good morning, Yuma!" she exclaimed, happily. "Are you ready for today?"
"Of course!" Yuma replied, enthusiastically. He then looked back to the entrance of the monorail station where Sadame was stood. "I''ll catch ya later, Samasu-sensei!" Yuma waved to his teacher, before casually walking away with Kotori.
"I said I'd take you anywhere you wanted today so where do you want to go?"
"Hmn~" Kotori smiled knowingly at him. "I thought it might be nice to check out the museum this morning. I figured a place we'd both enjoy would be a good idea and besides, we never did get around to visiting it back during the holidays."
"Huh, you're right." Yuma looked to the sky for a moment as he recalled the events back then. "The day we were going to visit it the Desperado stuff happened."
"Exactly." Kotori nodded. "And then I thought after that we could have a picnic in the park for lunch." She held the basket up slightly to emphasize the idea. "Then I guess we can do whatever we're up for in the afternoon."
"Well, sounds like a plan to me!!" Yuma exclaimed with a grin.
"Good. Then we should head to the museum first then!" With a slightly playful look on her face, Kotori moved the basket she was carrying into her left hand, before reaching out with her right hand to gently take Yuma's own hand in it. Although he was slightly stunned with the gesture at first, he soon smiled and held her hand back. This WAS a date after all, which meant hand-holding was perfectly fine to do in public between them.
Eventually the two of them reached the Domino City museum where they went through and enjoyed all the artefacts on display from various different locations in the world. They laughed together and discussed some of the items on display which were similar to his parents artefacts that he had at home or on the island. Kotori loved seeing Yuma's face light up at them, especially when he saw something familiar, it made a change from the downcast mood he had been in the weekend before.
After looking around the gift store, the two of them left and decided to head over to the park to have their picnic.
They set up the picnic under the shade of a large tree in order to keep out of the direct midday sunlight and sat down together for their lunch. Everything was fine, calm and relaxing, but neither would of guessed that something unusual was brewing not too far from them.
"I wonder what's going on over there."
Kotori had spotted a gathering of people not too far away from them as she packed some of the picnic items away. Yuma looked over curiously and both decided to go and check it out.
What they found was a young woman who seemed to be in a lot of discomfort, seemingly overheated from the sun, but as the two of them tried to help, it became increasingly obvious that the woman was suffering from something a lot more stranger than heat stroke.
Upon the distressed woman's request, Yuma and Kotori attempted to drive away the crowd, but before they could get away themselves, they found themselves trapped in a ring of fire. The only way out was to duel the woman and win.
Yuma stepped up, being the only duelist between the two of them, and began the duel.
Kotori watched closely as the duel progressed. Although concerned for their own safety as well as the safety of the woman, Kotori couldn't help but find herself continuously impressed by Yuma's improvement in his dueling. She could see him thinking things through, she could see him being patient and strategizing. She honestly couldn't be anymore prouder of how much improvement she'd seen in the last year.
When Yuma took down the Numbers belonging to the woman for a second time, the woman collapsed and the duel abruptly ended. Kotori called for an ambulance and the two of them stayed with the woman until the help arrived, making sure to keep her cool in the sun.
Once the ambulance left, the two of them went back to packing up their picnic, but as they did, Kotori noticed that Yuma was unusually quiet and was not as cheerful as he was before the duel. Understanding that the event had put a bit of a downer on their day and that Yuma might not be up for much at that moment, she suggested that they should go back to her hotel to rest for a little bit.
Yuma simply agreed.

Arriving at Kotori's hotel room, Kotori told Yuma to make himself comfortable while she made them some drinks. Yuma nodded and went to sit on the bed, crossing his legs and taking out two cards from the deck holster on his belt. When Kotori turned around, she saw him looking at them intently.
Curious, she walked over to him and sat down beside him on the bed.
"Are they those Number cards she used?" Kotori asked. Yuma nodded sharply in response.
"She said that they weren't a problem until she was given that 'Rank-Up Magic' card. Why would anyone give her a card like that, that would make these two act up like that?"
Kotori could see the concern and frustration on Yuma's face, but she didn't have a clue on what was going on herself, so she was at a loss of what to say.
"I figured for now I'll just keep these two safe, until I'm able to give them back to her."
Kotori frowned and looked down. "...It's only now I realize that we never got her name. Would you really be able to give them back to her?"
Yuma reached back to his holster, placing the two cards back in. "If they want to be back with her, then I'll come across her again."
Kotori agreed slightly, before the two of them fell into an awkward silence, both not really knowing what to say.
In the end, it was Yuma who broke it.
"Kotori. I'm sorry." Kotori looked up curiously at Yuma, who was looking away from her. "In the end, I wasn't able to keep my promise to you."
"Yuma, what do you mean? You didn't know something like that would happen."
"I know...! But..." He gave out an exasperated sigh. "I really wanted to make today special for you. I wanted to try my best with this, but in the end, it kinda got messed up anyway.
I'm really sorry."
Kotori watched as Yuma closed his eyes and grimaced, almost like he was completely disappointed in himself for what happened. Slowly, Kotori reached over with her hand and plced it on Yuma's cheek, making Yuma turn to look at her.
"Yuma. It doesn't matter what happened. The day doesn't have to be perfect. Things can be unpredictable." Yuma looked sullenly at Kotori, still not really sure what to think of the situation.
"I'll admit, I was surprised when you told me you still wanted to go through with this date. I thought you wouldn't be up to it after everything that's happened.
But Yuma, you don't have to force yourself to try and make today perfect and if things are too crazy right now, I'm fine waiting a bit longer to try a date at another time, when things are less complicated. I'll wait as long as you need me to until you feel more up to it.
Right now, date or not, the important thing to me is that we're here and we're together, no matter what crazy stuff we get dragged into. Because I want to be there for you, Yuma."
Yuma listened to Kotori's words carefully, as he felt her gentle and soothing touch on his cheek. Carefully, he raised his hand up and placed it on hers, holding it against his face. He took a moment to close his eyes to enjoy her embrace, before opening them and looking at her. Kotori responded with a gentle and calming smile that helped to make him feel calmer himself.
Eventually, he slowly leaned forward and wrapped his arms around her, pulling her into a hug. Kotori responded by also wrapping her arms around him and burying her face into his chest.
After a while, Yuma spoke, but his voice was small and soft, which was not his usual tone.
"... no matter what's happened, no matter what stupid stuff I got myself into, you've always supported me and stood by me, no matter what, but it wasn't until this past year when I really started to truly appreciate it.
You're my best friend, Kotori, one of my absolute best friends. You always have been.
That's why I wanted to answer to your feelings. I know that no matter what, we'll always be best friends but...
... I want to give being more than that a try. I want to see where it leads us."
Kotori listened to Yuma's soft words carefully. She paused for a moment afterwards, taking a moment to absorb it all, before a small emotional smile appeared on her face and slight tears appeared in her eyes. She tightened her hold on him, and nuzzled her face further into the shirt he was wearing.
"...I'd like to see where it leads us too."
A small, content smile also appeared on Yuma's face as he heard Kotori's reply to him. No more further words were uttered as the two decided to simply enjoy their warm embrace with each other.
-----------------------------------
Once the time came for Yuma to return to the island, the two teenagers decided to walk together, hand-in-hand, to the monorail station. As they saw it come into view, they could see Sadame waiting for Yuma outside it. They stopped walking and turned to each other, still holding hands, knowing that this is where they would part.
"I guess I'll see you next weekend. Now Yuya and Yuzu are awake I want to come over to the island to see them again."
Yuma smiled and nodded. "I'm sure they'd really like that."
"Hmn! Well, I best let you head back-"
"Hey, Kotori...?"
Kotori curiously looked at Yuma. "Hm? What is it?"
"Ah... well... y'see..." he stuttered a little bit. He then paused, taking a moment to arrange what he wanted to say in his head. Afterwards, he gave Kotori a huge positive grin, the type of smile she loved to see on him. "A second date! The next time we get more time together, when things are hopefully less crazy, we'll go on a second date! I guess it might not be until the winter holidays but, that's a whole two weeks of us doing whatever we want!"
Giving him a gentle smile, Kotori reached up to him and gave him a soft kiss on his cheek. "I'd like that."
Slightly stunned by the kiss, Yuma blushed, but he then grinned once more and laughed lightly, which made Kotori laugh too.
"... but otherwise, I'll see you next weekend. I'll bring fresh flowers for Yuya and Yuzu too."
Yuma smiled and nodded before the two let go of each other's hands and began to part ways. As they did, they looked back and waved to each other momentarily, before setting off again on their way.
Despite what happened, they felt that the day ended on a very positive note, opening a new and exciting journey for them both together.
