- Talk Between Two -

Characters: Yuma Tsukumo, Yuya Sakaki
Synopsis: After being forced to duel while he was sick, Yuya is taken to the infirmary in a serious state. Once he wakes up, he and Yuma talk about their situation with Desperado.

It had been difficult watching his friend suffer while laying in a bed in the infirmary. Yuma had never been the type to just sit by and wait, but that's all they could do.
Yuya had become so exhausted during his duel, his body had begun finding it difficult to fight the virus he had, resulting in a dangerously high fever as his tired body desperately attempted to fight back. Yuma had noticed the worried looks of those dealing with him in the infirmary, he could tell it was serious. The infirmary staff had hooked him up to an IV drip to give him fluids and medication, then began the waiting to see if his body would respond to it.

Although Yuya remained unconscious, his struggle against the virus was clearly visible. His breathing remained erratic and heavy, his face stayed pale and clammy. He'd occasionally groan and move his head. He was incredibly uncomfortable.
Yuma waited along side Yuzu. It broke his heart seeing how worried she was over him. Though he, too, was incredibly worried for their friend.

On the night of the day it happened, Yuma returned to the dorm he shared with Yuya, but he found it very quiet without his friend there. In a sudden fit of anger, he slammed his hands down onto the desk, then slumped into a chair holding his head. He'd been holding that frustration back all day and he needed to let it out.
He sat there for a bit, mulling over things in his head. What had happened to him, what had happened to Yuya...
This had to stop. All of this had to stop.

He looked up after a bit and laid eyes on his D-Gazer which was on the desk beside him.
He called Kotori, he'd promised her that he'd keep her updated, but before he knew it, he'd spent an hour ranting to her about the situation.
She listened to his every word and she gave him reassurance where she could. By the end, he felt better for getting things off his chest to her.

Into Tuesday, Yuya's fever did not rise any higher, but did not lower until that night, when his body finally began responding to the treatment. Although a small fever did remain, it was no longer at a worrying level and it allowed his body to rest more peacefully.

--------------------------------------

On Wednesday, Yuya had woken up. Upon hearing he had, Yuma went around to the infirmary to visit him that afternoon between classes. Smiling, he entered the room and greeted Yuya, who gave him the best smile back he could. It was obvious that he was still very weak and exhausted.

"I brought you something!" Yuma exclaimed happily as he placed a hand inside a plastic carrier he was holding, pulling out a couple of dueling magazines from it. "I know it can get pretty boring in here, so I got you these!"

Yuya took the magazines off Yuma and looked at them with gratefulness, before placing them down on the bed. It really had been pretty boring between visitors. All he really could do was just lay there and either sleep or stare at the ceiling.

"Thank you."

"Don't mention it!"

Yuma sat down in the chair beside the bed and glanced over at his friend.

"I heard from some of the others that you're still feeling pretty rough, huh."

Yuya nodded in response, prompting Yuma to grin at him reassuringly.

"Well, don't worry! You're well on the road to recovery now and you'll come back ten times, no, a hundred times stronger!!"

Yuya could tell Yuma was just trying to cheer him up with his usual goofy attitude, but not even that could chase his worries away. He gradually looked away from his friend and glanced down absently to the magazines in his lap. The room fell into an awkward silence.

"...what are we going to do?" Yuma frowned at Yuya as his friend spoke up. "... with Desperado... I mean..."

Yuma paused before responding, his expression becoming a bit more serious. "I don't know... but that big footballer guy you dueled left Yuzu and me with a name that might help us."

"Yuzu mentioned something about that this morning."

"Yeah, it's the guy who's been jailbreaking duel disks. Apparently he's been doing it for Desperado, so he might know something. Maybe he can give us something to work with.
Futaba, Jouji is his name."

"Futaba... Jouji...?" Yuya seemed to recognize that name. "I'm sure I talked to a guy on the school community with that name once not too long ago."

"Hm? Really?"

Yuya reached over for his duel disk, which was located on a bedside table, and began looking up the community on the screen. After a few moments, he turned the duel disk around so Yuma could see it. On the screen was Jouji's introduction post from earlier in December.

"I really don't know what you'll get out of him though." Yuya told him. "He didn't seem to think very highly of those in Osiris Red when I spoke to him."

"Haa, well, I won't know until I try!!" Yuma responded, clasping his hands into fists confidently. "I'm sure I can get him to tell me something that'll be useful!"

Yuya didn't look too sure. Yuma's expression fell again, before he placed a hand onto his friends shoulder.

"Don't worry, bud. We'll find a way to sort this out."

Yuya nodded slightly, but his expression didn't change. Yuma let go of Yuya's shoulder and sat back in his chair.

"It was amazing though."

"Hm?" Yuya looked over at him. "What was?"

"Your duel!" Yuma responded. "Especially when you got that fusion monster out! You really surprised me with that!"

Yuya reached over to the bedside table, where a card was laying on top of it. He picked it up and looked at it. "It called to me during the duel."

"The dragon did?" Yuma questioned. Yuya nodded in response.

"I couldn't find the strength to pick myself up and then it called to me. Somehow it gave me the strength to continue and summon it."

"Heh. Seems like we both sorta evolved in these last duels we've had, huh. Me and that ZEXAL stuff and now you with your, hhmm... Pendulum Fusion!"

"Pendulum... Fusion?"

"Yeah! I mean, that card is totally made for your Pendulum based deck, right? And you fused it with one of those pendulum effects too!"

Yuya smiled at him a little. "Yeah, I guess you're right."
He looked back at Rune-Eyes' card and started thinking. First he created Pendulum Summoning and now he had this dragon call to him that was also related to Pendulums. Was that the "power" he was said to have? Making up Pendulum based cards on the spot? He had a feeling there could be more to it than that, but something was definitely amiss.
Not that he was complaining. Discovering Pendulums had given him a lot of opportunities, including being at the academy, which is why he was definitely not going to let Desperado get what they wanted. He had every right to be at this school as anyone else and even though he and Yuma had been through some tough duels since the school year began, he still wanted to make people smile through his entertainment dueling. He wanted to show the world what his dad created.
He wanted to show Desperado that they haven't broken his spirit.

Yuma smiled when he noticed the more determined and driven expression appear on Yuya's face, relieved that his friend hadn't given up hope, despite his worries. Yuma then looked up at the wall clock in the room, which made him jump up from his seat.

"Urk, I'm almost late for my next class!!" he exclaimed. "I'll contact that Jouji guy later on and we'll see what we can get out of him!"

Yuya nodded to him before the two clenched their fists and bumped them together, before Yuma took off quickly to his next class.
Afterwards, Yuya laid down in his bed, holding Rune-Eyes' card above him.

"I guess we'll see where this all takes us next, then."
