- Kotori's View -
Characters: Yuma Tsukumo, Kotori Mizuki
Synopsis: Kotori reflects back on the two years that Yuma had been away at Duel Academy, but when Yuma tells her that he isn't going to visit home for the holidays, she takes things into her own hands.
Kotori had to admit, when Yuma had told her that he had gotten into Duel Academy and she joked at him that Heartland City was going to be quiet without him there, she really hadn't expected how quiet her life would really become without her best friend there. No more of him crashing into the Obots that clean the streets, no more of him falling asleep in classes and getting yelled at by the teacher, no more of him getting over-excited over duels and most importantly, no more of him declaring "Kattobing!" when someone gave him a stupid and impossible challenge for him to try (and fail) at. She'd moved onto high school without him and things just seemed way too quiet without him there with her.
That's why she was always happy when he called her over the D-Gazers or e-mailed her to tell her about what he'd been doing at the Duel Academy. She remembered how excited he was in his first year, telling her about how he'd made a few new friends and that they even formed some kind of club, how one of those friends tutored him through his first year finals and how he met a pro-duelist and got an Xyz card off him. He seemed to be enjoying himself, even if it was obvious he wasn't quite applying himself to his studies, but she knew he had good friends to help him. But as he went into his second year, his calls and e-mails became more and more about what he was doing with his dueling and less about his friends. She knew two of them had graduated, but did he really not make any new friends at all that year? She became worried around this time as it didn't seem like he was hanging out with others as he used to do with her and Tetsuo.
Was he lonely? She wondered. Was he finding it difficult to make new friends? She remembered him mentioning he had a new room-mate at the start of that year, but when she questioned Yuma about them, she got the same reply as the previous year, his room-mates had moved up to higher dorms fairly fast. From Yuma's response, it felt like he had never even gotten the chance to get to know them.
She also wondered about his studies, he would talk to her so much about the duels he'd had with others, but nothing about his classes. He had to have a friend help him through his first year, so what about the second year?
Sadly, she wasn't surprised when she received a call from him at the end of that year, telling her that he'd failed his second year. She felt disappointed in him and a little angry, but mostly she just felt sorry for him. At the time she could see on his face how ashamed he was that he'd failed so badly, realising the mistake that he'd made, but Kotori had to wonder if his failings had something to do with how things had been for him over that year. She was thankful that the Academy had decided to give him another chance.
Around the same time, Yuma had began telling her about his new room-mate, a boy named Yuya who was starting his first year. Then this moved onto also mentioning Yuya's friend, Yuzu, who was also starting her first year. She had hoped so much that Yuya wouldn't move up so quickly and leave Yuma behind like the others had and thankfully, this seemed to be the case. As the months went by, Yuma's e-mails and calls became not just about dueling, but about the things he'd been doing with his two new friends. He especially talked about Yuya a lot and seemed to spend a lot of time with him. Kotori was happy that it seemed Yuma had finally found a friend he'd really clicked with and could rely on.
Sat on the embankment of the river that ran through Heartland City as the sun was setting around her, she looked at her D-Gazer as Yuma was excitedly telling her about an "Action Duel" he'd had recently. He'd mentioned them before and she barely knew what they were, but she was happy to just listen to Yuma talk about it anyway.
"Ah, it's a shame there was no real conclusion for the duel." She said to him. "But I guess if he was exhausted as you say he was, it was good that it stopped when it did."
"Yeah, but I'm sure I'll duel him again at some point!!" Yuma replied back, happily.
"I'm sure you will."
Kotori paused for a moment. She really missed seeing Yuma and all his excited-ness in person. She'd not seen him in over two years as he'd never once came back to Heartland City, not even during holidays, but the winter holidays were coming up.
"Say, Yuma..."
"Hm?"
"What are you doing for the holidays? Are you going to come back to Heartland for a bit?"
"Oh- err..." Kotori could see the hesitation on his face as he searched for an answer. "...well, I was going to stay here, actually. I mean, Yuya and Yuzu aren't going back to Maiami City and I didn't want to leave them on their own and..." There seemed to be something else he wanted to add, but it was like he couldn't quite say it. Kotori's face fell a little, she really had hoped that she would of been able to see him and spend some time with him.
"Yuma, you've not been home in over two years..." she thought for a moment, then looked at Yuma with a determined expression. "It's settled then."
Yuma looked at her puzzled. "Hwah? What's settled?"
"If you can't come and visit Heartland, then I'll just come and visit you!"
Yuma pointed to himself. "Huh? Visit me? Here?"
"Well, why not? I've kinda wanted to visit Domino City anyway and I hear there is loads to do there, so why not visit the city and you at the same time? That's if, you have the time over the holidays."
Yuma paused briefly. He knew he'd have some schoolwork to do over the holidays, as well as the tutoring from Bright which was still in effect over the two week break, but he was sure he could get that done and hang out with Kotori as well. Besides, he had missed her in the two years he hadn't been in Heartland City, even more so since he had met Yuya and Yuzu, whose friendship reminded him a lot of his own with Kotori.
Though he wasn't about to admit to her that he'd missed her.
"Ah, nah, it's okay! I'll have plenty of time! I think you coming here is a great idea!"
Kotori smiled in response. "That's great! I'd really like to meet Yuya and Yuzu while I'm there too!"
"Ah! I'm sure they'd love to meet you too, Kotori!"
The two talked for a bit longer about Kotori's plans to visit Domino City during the holidays until Kotori realised that it was getting dark and she should really start heading home. The two said their goodbyes and the transmission over the D-Gazers ended. Kotori looked at her D-Gazer for a bit, slightly blushing.
She was finally going to see Yuma after being apart from him for such a long time.
To be honest, for Christmas, this was all she had really wanted.
