Characters: Juudai Yuuki, Tomoko Kawasaki
Synopsis: Juudai talks to Tomoko about her new powers, as well as the experience he had with his own.
If there was anything Tomoko loved just as much as getting to work with her spirit friends at the Spirit Foundation, it was the ice-cream that Juudai took her out for almost every month as a thank you for her work there. Usually she couldn't wait to go to the cafe near the park that had a big selection of different ice-creams, though she almost always chose the same one, triple chocolate with chocolate sprinkles, you can never have too much chocolate after all.
But this day was different.
Leaning his head on his hand, Juudai looked over the table at his young friend. Tomoko was sat quietly, not saying anything, gazing down at the table. the hood of her beige jacket still over her head, despite the fact they had been indoors for a while. Her favourite ice-cream was in a glass dish in front of her which she had barely touched. Juudai had long finished his and noticed Tomoko's had been more or less left to melt.
Wondering how he could get the girls attention, he mischievously lifted up his spoon and dug it into Tomoko's ice-cream, scooping out a bit.
"Well, if you don't want it, guess I'll have to eat it all myself~"
He put the spoon near his mouth, as if he was going to eat it, but paused and looked over at the girl, expecting a reaction.
But there wasn't any.
Sighing, he simply placed the spoon back into his empty glass dish. It was so odd seeing Tomoko like this. She was usually so energetic and happy. Maybe this whole thing was weighing down on her more than he thought. He was sure that their usual outing for ice-cream would cheer her up a little.
Realising that this was not working, he stood up from where he was sitting.
"Lets go for a walk, Tomoko."
Silently the girl stood up as well and followed behind Juudai out of the cafe.
-------------------------------------
Outside, a chilly autumn breeze was blowing through the streets taking occasional fall leaves from the branches of nearby trees into the darkening dusk sky. Looking over at Tomoko, Juudai smiled softly, before pointing over to the park.
"Let's go to the park for a bit, okay?"
Tomoko just responded with a nod and followed beside him as they made their way over to the Domino City Park.
Once they had reached it, Juudai headed over to the children's play area, which was surprisingly vacant and sat down on a swing. Tomoko followed and sat down on another beside him. Juudai swung gently on his, though Tomoko chose not to do so, choosing instead to just sit and look down at the floor.
"... new powers are kinda scary, huh?"
Tomoko looked up suddenly at Juudai, before turning her head away.
"Guess you know about that..."
"Yeah. I do." Juudai stopped swinging and looked over at her. "And I know you're a little worried about it, especially since the Arcadia Movement aren't able to help right now."
"...I just don't want to hurt anyone..."
"Who says you will?" Juudai questioned. "The ability of a Psychic Duelist is making things like holograms more real, but the power is very emotion based and you're not a naturally angry person. You're a really caring and compassionate girl and the fact your power has shown up as a healing ability, rather than through destruction, shows that."
Tomoko remained silent and looked at the floor again. She didn't seem too convinced of Juudai's words.
"I've never really told you about my power, did I?"
Tomoko looked up and shook her head slowly. She knew Juudai had something special about him, but knew nothing specific about it. With that, Juudai jumped off the swing, before walking over to Tomoko and kneeling down before her.
"I'm going to show you something, okay?"
Tomoko nodded and Juudai covered his hands over his eyes. When he removed them, Tomoko found that instead of their usual brown colour, they were now golden in colour. This surprised Tomoko, who looked at him with wide eyes.
"Is it scary to you?"
Tomoko laughed a little and shook her head.
"Why would it be scary? You're still Juudai, even if your eyes look different. They look really cool like that!" She then looked at him a bit cynically. "So is that your power? You can change your eye colour?"
Juudai chuckled. "The eye colour just means the power is active. Though I guess it makes a good party trick. Look!"
He covered his eyes again and once he removed them, his eyes were now orange and green. Tomoko recognised those eyes straight away, pointing at him with excitement.
"Now they're Yubel's colours!! How'd you do that??"
"Because Yubel is a part of me and I can use her power too." Juudai smiled at his young friend as his eyes returned to normal. "I'm glad that made you smile."
Tomoko was taken off-guard a little, realising that she'd briefly forgotten her own worries after seeing Juudai's little trick. Smiling, Juudai sat down on the floor by the pole support of the swing.
"I guess I have a few different powers, but it's the first one I want to tell you about."
Curiously, Tomoko got up off of her swing and decided to sit next to him on the floor in order to listen.
"My power is named 'The gentle darkness'. Though it's also often referred to as 'The power of the Supreme King'. I came into the power back when I was still attending the Duel Academy and at first I had a lot of trouble controlling it. I guess just like with a psychic power, it would activate unexpectedly with my emotions, especially if I was angry. The power also comes with a not so good background, so there was that too, which only made things worse."
"What kind of background?" Tomoko asked with curiosity. Juudai glanced down at her, wondering if he should tell her, but he didn't want to hide anything, he wanted to be truthful.
"...others have had this power before me and they succumbed to being taken over by it. They used it to take over places and... kill a lot of people. It's how the power got the title "Supreme King". And... I was terrified that was going to be me too. I did succumb to it once, but thanks to my friends I was brought out of it, but there was always that worry there that I would follow that same path and I worried about it too much to the point where it effected my overall health and mentality. I was in a pretty bad way back then."
Tomoko looked to the floor. He didn't seem to be doing a very good job of making this easier for her.
"But the reason I struggled controlling my powers for as long as I did was because of those worries and because I wouldn't accept the power as a part of myself. Back then, if I had the choice to, I would of gotten rid of that power... but that would of been a mistake. It took me a long time to realize it but I eventually was able to accept the power as a part of me and it was then when I found I was able to control it."
Juudai rubbed the back of his head.
"I guess what I'm trying to say with this is to try and not worry yourself over whether you might hurt people in duels or not, because, with a power that's as emotion based as yours, it could hinder how your power responds to you and how you respond to it. Accepting it is the first step in being able to control it."
Tomoko looked up at Juudai with wide innocent eyes, listening to his words. She then frowned a little.
"But now I sometimes get upset when other people around me are upset, what if that happens when I'm dueling?"
Juudai smiled and placed a hand on the girl's shoulder.
"I imagine they'll be ways to block it out mentally, or reduce it's impact. It's just finding someone who can help teach you that."
"If there is someone..."
Tomoko sighed and looked away from him. It's true with the Arcadia Movement on the verge of closing, there was very few others who could help those with psychic abilities like Tomoko. No-one to help them understand their powers, or learn how to control them, or even have a place to meet people like themselves. This city needed something like that. To be honest, it needed something like that for anyone with any kind of power. Through the last several years, he had met people who had many different powers, whether they were natural powers or not and with the increase of duel spirits in the city, that amount may even go up. People with unusual abilities needed a place they can trust to go to, a place where they wouldn't be judged, where they could practise their abilities.
Standing up and taking a few steps forward, Juudai stood still for a moment, just listening to the sound of the autumn breeze rustling the browning leaves of the nearby trees. He breathed in deeply, then let out a slow breath.
"Hey... Tomoko. I'll make a deal with you."
"A.. deal...?"
The girl stood up too, looking over at Juudai who currently had his back to her.
"Yeah. I'll do what I can to try and find help for you. To find someone who can give you some proper guidance and I'll see if I can find a way to get a limiter made for you... but... if I do, I want you to promise me something."
"A promise...?
Juudai turned around, smiling gently to the girl as he lowered himself to her height, placing both his hands on her shoulders.
"I want you to promise me that you won't rely completely on the limiter, okay? If I manage to find someone who can correctly guide you on how best to manage your powers, I want you to aim to able to control them completely on your own. It's not impossible and you're in the right position to do it. If you rely too much on the limiter, then you might not be able to control your abilities at their full power."
"Do you really think I can do that...? Even when I'm angry or upset?"
Juudai nodded, his smile remaining.
"I think if anyone can, it's you. The road won't be easy, and you may have some hiccups along the way, but remember that no matter what, you have all of us here to support you."
Tomoko thought for a moment in silence, then she looked at Juudai with a confident look on her face.
"Okay. I promise that I'll do my best to learn how to control it!"
Grinning, he playfully ruffled Tomoko's hair before standing up. "You'll do great, kiddo."
"C'mon, let's head back home. It's getting kinda dark now."
Tomoko grinned at Juudai and nodded. "Okay!!"
With that, the two of them began walking back to Sakana, though while some thoughts were now lifted from the shoulders of Tomoko, it was now Juudai whose head was full of worry.
How exactly was he going to make good on this promise to her? Could he even do anything?
All he could do was try his best.
