- Haunted Memories - Part 1: Running From Ghosts -
Characters: Yuto Sakaki, Yuya Sakaki
Synopsis: Yuto struggles to cope with his returning memories.
Ever since the duel Yuya had done with Reira, Yuto had gradually gained more and more of his lost memories. They'd often come to him in flashbacks without warning, or in nightmares during the night. Memories of his home being destroyed, memories of people being turned to cards before his very eyes, memories of being a giant demon...
The one thing that was consistent with his memories though were Shun and Ruri, his close friends. They were the only people he felt he could trust and reach out too. The one thing that was more or less the same, but when he visited them, he found Shun's memories hadn't returned to him, though subconsciously, he might of known something was wrong. He had been very overprotective of Ruri during his visit, even around him, so Yuto wasn't able to talk to Ruri to see if she had remembered anything.
Eventually, he retreated. He no longer felt he was able to turn to them or open up to them about what he was experiencing and he didn't want to risk unlocking their memories, knowing the suffering he was going through.
It was probably for the best if they didn't have those other memories and go through that same pain.
Not knowing what to do, or who to turn to, Yuto simply hid himself away in his basement room at the Sakaki household and shut himself off from everyone.
Each night, the nightmares plagued him. Memories flashing back and repeating over and over again.
The attack, the flames, the explosions, the laughing, the giant mechanical monsters.
His home in ruins, himself and others having to fight for their lives against Academia every night and day.
Then sometimes the dream would turn to him being the one destroying things. The feeling of powerful anger engulfing him as he did so.
Eventually, he just didn't dare sleep longer than a few hours a night, if he could sleep at all. He spent most of his time just writing, getting all his frustrations, fear and anger onto paper. It was the only way he felt he could vent things out.
Yuya often tried to reach out to him, but Yuto never responded.
The only time he left the room was to seek out food. It seemed Yoko caught on to this, and began leaving him things in the fridge to have at night.
Yuto felt confused and lost. Did he really belong with this family? Were his memories with them real or fake? He had no issues with Yuya, in fact he was the brother he was the most closest to, but were they even brothers? Were any of them?
Out of curiosity, late one night while in the kitchen to collect food, Yuto happened to look up at the photos on the wall. Family pictures of Yuya, Yoko and Yushou.
He hadn't noticed before, but himself, Yugo and Yuri weren't featured in those photos.
His curiosity overflowing, he wandered over to the living area and a small bookshelf. On it were a few photo albums which Yuto began flicking through.
Again and again he found no photos of anyone but Yuya and their 'parents'.
He wasn't there. Yuri wasn't there. Yugo wasn't there.
Dropping the photo albums on the floor, Yuto's confused and tired mind just came to one conclusion.
He really didn't belong here in the Sakaki's lives.
But where did he belong?
He didn't know, but he had to leave.
Looking up towards the second floor of the house, Yuto frowned. Yuri vanishing had already been hard on both Yuya and Yugo, the latter of which had been out every hour he could spare trying to find him.
But he felt he had to leave.
Changing into his old attire of a green shirt, black tie and cape, as well as a red scarf around his neck, Yuto gathered a few things and left that night, not knowing where he'd go, or what he'd do.
He just needed to go.
------------------
Yuto wasn't sure where exactly he was travelling too, but somehow, he found himself in Domino City.
At first he wasn't sure why he'd come here, but he then remembered that he and Shun had come to Domino in order to search for Ruri. While Shun worked as a front with LDS, he had worked from the shadows of the city.
Through the night, he moved above the city, jumping from roof to roof of the tightly packed buildings.
Eventually he jumped down onto the street below and took a moment to glance around.
The area was deserted. A street in a run-down area of Domino City that was littered with buildings in various states of disrepair.
But as he looked at the buildings, the memories once again began flashing in his head.
Looking up, he could see it all.
The huge monsters towering above the destroyed buildings of Heartland. Explosions ringing out. The flames flickering around him.
Yuto attempted to activate the duel disk on his arm, but he stumbled and fell backwards in the process.
Panicking, he got to his feet and ran, unaware that what he was running from were the ghosts in his head.
------------------
The next morning, Yuya slid down the pole that connected the second floor of their house to the first floor. For some reason he'd woken up earlier than usual, so not even his mother was up yet.
He'd spent the night thinking things over in his head, a lot of things actually, but the one thing he concentrated the most on was how to approach Yuto.
As much as giving him space was an option, Yuya had done that over the holidays, and Yuto had not shown any signs of wanting to talk, so he was now taking Yuzu's advice and seeing if he could just find ways to be around him and talk to him.
As he mulled over how he was going to do that, Yuya noticed the photo albums that were on the floor. Walking over to them, he curiously picked them up, wondering how they even got there. Did they fall off the shelf?
He flicked through them. They were photos he hadn't seen for ages, but the more he flicked through, the more he realised something was off with them.
Where was Yuto, Yuri and Yugo in these photos?
It was then he noticed that the door to Yuto's room was open.
Placing the photo albums down, he slowly approached the door and walked through it.
"Yuto...?"
There wasn't a reply, so Yuya began walking down the stairs.
Once he reached the bottom, he saw that nobody was there.
Panic began to set in as Yuya searched around his room for clues as to where he could of gone. Maybe he just went outside for fresh air? After all, he'd been cooped up in his room for a while. That had to be it.
He then glanced over to Yuto's desk, noting a small black book that sat on it. Yuya bit his lip nervously as he walked over. Yuto's writing book was something his brother tended to be a bit secretive of, and Yuya didn't want to pry, but right now he needed something.
Anything.
Reaching out, Yuya opened the book and flicked through it. Towards the end, Yuto's writing seemed to get more messy and erratic. The poems and writings became full of uncertainty. Questions. Confusion. Worries. Anger.
He questioned his place in the family. He questioned whether he really had 'brothers'. He questioned who he really was. He was unsure what memories were real or if any were fake.
He wrote about his struggles to sleep. He wrote about his nightmares. He wrote about the memories plaguing him.
With each thing Yuya read, his heart broke as he realised just how much Yuto had been struggling with his memories and just how much stress it had been putting on him.
Wiping away the tears in his eyes, he picked up the book and ran back up the stairs to the kitchen and living area and straight out of the door, but he stopped half way down the path.
Part of him had hoped that Yuto had been there. Just out getting some air like he originally believed.
But he wasn't there.
He was gone. He'd left, just like Yuri did.
Yuya simply fell to his knees, feeling completely defeated.
His fear was coming true.
He was losing his brothers.
