- Safety Nets -
Characters: Yuya Sakaki
Synopsis: After a disagreement with Isabel, Yuya mulls on the idea of having safety nets.
Sitting by the cliff edge, not too far from Ra Yellow, Yuya was staring out at the endless sea in front of him, through the orange tinted lenses of his goggles that covered his eyes. The only sound that could be heard were the waves that rolled up against the rocks below and the sound of the gentle breeze rustling through the leaves of the trees. It was late, so there weren't many people about.
Yuya tugged at the red hoodie he was wearing as another breeze lapped around him, sending a small shivering sensation over his body. Despite the islands more milder weather this time of the year, compared to the mainland, the nights could still be quite bitterly cold.
After the breeze had subsided, Yuya let out a sigh, before taking the pendant he wore from around his neck, holding it up in front of him. Silently he watched it slowly sway from side to side in an uninterrupted motion, the blue crystal glinting in the moonlight as it did.
'Gutless'. That word had struck a cord with him. It was something he hadn't heard someone say to him in quite a while. He actually hadn't realised how long it had been since someone really called him something like that. Gutless, a coward... so it was almost like a knife through his chest when he saw those words.
And they were just that. Words.
But still, the whole exchange with Isabel had left him feeling confused and frustrated. He was sure he'd done the right thing for himself at that time, but it seems she had other ideas, that he should of taken a risk, that he should of moved forward with no hesitation at that point.
Letting out a frustrated groan, clutching the pendant in his hand, he flopped back so he was laying against the grass, looking up at the clear night sky.
It was times like this where he really missed his dad. He wished so much right now to be able to talk to him, to ask him about his own experiences. Did he ever have a situation like this? Did he ever have to choose between taking a risk, or choosing a more secure route? As he wondered this, the words his dad told him when he was much younger echoed in his head.
"If you allow yourself to freeze up from fear, then you'll never move forward."
But where was the line between doing something because of fear, or doing something because it was more secure?
Was having a safety net that bad?
He bit his lip a little as he wondered that and as he realised that everything he'd said to Isabel was only a part of why he decided to decline the offer to the tournament. It was the biggest part, sure, but there were other reasons too.
Like Yuzu and Gongenzaka. He wanted to see through the rest of their time at the Academy together. He wanted to experience everything together with them, but were they also safety nets? If he developed to the pros ahead of them, he'd be on his own, at least until they caught up, but he had to admit, he'd had thoughts and worries about how the three of them would develop beyond the Academy. How things could change, the different paths they could take... and it scared him.
He'd known Gongenzaka since he started school... he'd known Yuzu all his life... and he was worried that they might all take different paths as they became adults.
He felt safe being with them, experiencing things with them. He remembered how relieved he was when Yuzu decided to join him at the Academy, because it meant he got to experience it with her. Because she was going to be there with him.
And on top of that, he had to admit, he was a little apprehensive of failing at the pros and not having anything to fall back on. He was afraid of going back to the times where people saw him as a coward. Back to when people would jeer at him on the streets. Come up to him and taunt him.
That had left a mark on him and this had dragged those memories back up. Something he hadn't really had to think of in a while.
With all these confusing thoughts, worries and insecurities running through his head, all he could do was let out a heavy sigh before pulling up his goggles back onto the top of his head so that he could see the stars in the sky above him more clearly. For now, all he could really do was focus on the impending duel with Isabel. No matter what, he was going to do his best in it. He wanted so much to convey his father's dueling to others, to entertain and spread smiles using the dueling method he created, to climb up the ranks to get to where his father got to.
And he knew, that at some point, he was going to have to take more risks to get there and break some of the ideas of having safety nets.
