- Targets -

Characters: Yuma Tsukumo, Yuya Sakaki, Juudai Yuuki, Yuzu Hiragi
Notes/Synopsis: This story is not canon to the RP timeline and was written as an experimental piece of Yuma and Yuya getting into trouble. This was written around the time we were considering giving Yuma and Yuya a plot to develop them as characters (which later became the Desperado plot)
Yuma and Yuya get into a spot of trouble against a mysterious assailant who is targeting them.

Background to the story:
Yuma was contacted my a mystery duelist asking him for a duel at a certain location in Domino City. While Yuma, being the trustworthy guy we all know, thinks nothing is wrong and is happy someone wants to duel him, Yuya questions why the duelist didn't leave their name. Upon Yuma telling him their name wasn't really important, Yuya trusts Yuma's view on it and decides to tag along to watch.
Up on arriving at the location, they find it is nothing but an alleyway or lot that's out of sight from the main streets. While Yuma is eager for the duel and goes in blindly, expecting a duel field or something, Yuya feels a little unsure if this situation is okay, but again, Yuma is blind to it due to his optimism.
Once they enter the alleyway/lot, they find no-one there, until a mysterious cloaked figure shows up behind them, blocking their exit. Just the presence of this figure puts the boys on edge and they realise that they maaaay of just walked into some kind of trap. The figure seems glad that both his "targets" showed up, but Yuma is the first. Yuma accepts and tells Yuya he's gonna beat this guy down for tricking them.
Though Yuma puts up a good fight, the duel does not go in his favour as the clocked guy is absurdly powerful with whatever hack deck he has. He also finds the pain from the attacks is incredibly real, something Yuya is confused with, as this isn't an action duel, so why is Yuma taking real damage. (There maybe hints in the duel about why Yuma was targeted/how he hasn't realized his true potential yet and how he's the weakest of this guys "Targets")
Ultimately, Yuma looses the duel and although still conscious, he's injured. The cloaked figure is about to approach Yuma to "finish him off" when Yuya steps in and challenges the guy. Yuya really doesn't agree with him using dueling in this way, as duels should be entertaining, not being used as a tool to hurt people. When he pendulum summons in the duel, the cloaked figure is amused that Yuya, despite being the pioneer of pendulums, has not even figured out how to further evolve the use of them. Yuya is also put off guard by how real the pain and damage actually do feel, it was not even on par with action dueling, this was way worse and way too real.
Yuya puts up a brave fight himself, but he ultimately loses as well and that's where this story begins because there's no way I'd be able to write two duels, screw that.

---------------------------------------------

Yuya looked ahead at the in-coming attack from the monster on the other side of the field. He had no monsters to protect himself, no spell or traps set, no way to avoid this attack. Knowing it was going to connect, all he could do was pull his goggles over his eyes and brace himself for the impact.
The great ball of energy from the attack quickly hit Yuya in the chest, making him fly back and hit the wall behind him with great force. He then fell to the floor with a thud.
There was no movement after that.

Yuma watched his friend's defeat with agony. If only he'd won his duel, if only he hadn't blindly come here, then this would of never of happened to him.
Despite his own injuries, he moved over to Yuya and gently began to shake his shoulder.

"O-oi... Yuya, come on. Yuya, wake up. YUYA!"

Despite his desperate efforts to wake him up, Yuya did not respond. As he continued to shake Yuya a bit harder to try and wake him, a sudden pain shot through his left shoulder. Yuma instantly held it with his right hand, wincing and tears welling up in his eyes.
He didn't know what to do.

"Pitiful."

The voice of the cloaked stranger behind him made Yuma look up.

"Both of you. Pitiful. But I guess it made my job easier. Now, to finish you both off."

They couldn't escape, there was no where to go and Yuya was out cold. Yuma looked down at his friend, before gradually he fought against the pain in his body to move in front of Yuya and hold his arms out as if creating a shield for his fallen friend.
Yuya protected him. Now it was time for him to do the same.

"I won't let you."

The figure laughed.

"And how do you plan to do that? You are by far the weakest of my targets. You have not realised anything about your true potential. And you think you can protect your friend like this?"

Yuma's eyes widened, before he looked solemnly to the floor. It was true he wasn't exactly the greatest duelist. Although he'd improved since getting Hope, he was still average at best, but he never let that stop him, he never let that get him down. Maybe he couldn't protect Yuya like this, but he would rather die trying than die giving up.

Yuma raised his head, his tear filled eyes fixed in a determined glare at the cloaked figure.

"I'm not moving."

"Very well. I was going to do you both the honour of dying together, but since you seem determined to try and protect him, then you shall die first."

The cloaked figure raised his arm up as the monster that had been used against Yuya began looming closer to them, towering over Yuma. The cloaked figure then quickly brought his arm down which signalled to the monster to attack. The monster began powering up and all Yuma could do was close his eyes tight and wait for the attack to hit.

"Yuya.
I'm sorry."

The sound of the attack setting off was heard. Yuma tensed up to prepare for the impact.
But the impact never arrived.

"WHAT!?"

At hearing the cloaked figures exclamation, Yuma opened his eyes and looked up. Right in front of him was another monster blocking the attack from them.
But... where did it come from?

The attack from the mysterious figure's monster stopped to reveal the monster that blocked it was grey all over and kind of looked like an alien superhero. Then, another figure seemed to drop in front of them from one of the buildings above them. Yuma looked over to them and recognised him as Juudai.

"Tch, Yuuki Juudai..."

The cloaked figure did not seem pleased to see him here.

"Oh, so you know of me. Then you'll know that I won't allow you to continue with what you are doing here! These two are just academy students!"

The figure laughed.

"I guess since they haven't realised it themselves, then of course you haven't realised it either..."

Juudai looked confused at his statement. "Realised what?"

The figure just let out an amused grunt, but seemed to step back a little, as if he didn't quite want to mess with Juudai.

"Let this be a warning. When your back is turned, those boys will be dead. Then you will be next.
Until we meet again. Yuuki Juudai."

A strange fog seemed to roll in from nowhere as the figure and his monster retreated into it.

"O-oi!" Juudai tried to peruse him, but the fog quickly cleared and revealed that the mystery figure was now no where to be seen. Juudai let out a defeated sigh. This was not a good thing for certain.

"Yuya!! Oi Yuya! Come on, bud! Wake up!!"

Juudai turned around to see Yuma desperately trying to wake his friend up. Juudai approached them and joined Yuma in kneeling down by Yuya. He quickly removed the goggles away from Yuya's eyes and head and placed them on the ground beside him.
He quickly looked the boy over. He wasn't exactly a medical professional, but there were some very distinct injuries on both Yuya and Yuma. It also seemed like Yuya may of hit his head when he fell to the floor.

"Yuya, right?"

Yuma nodded in response. Juudai then began tapping Yuya's cheek to see if he's respond.

"Hey, Yuya! Yuya!!"

There was no response, the boys eyes remained closed. Juudai stopped and gently placed his hand on the side of Yuya's neck. He breathed a sigh of relief when he felt a pulse.
Standing up, he pulled his phone out of his pocket.

"He's alive, but I need to get an ambulance for the both of you."

Again, Yuma nodded. He then looked up at Juudai as he was dialling the emergency number.

"How did you find us?"

Juudai looked back at him as he raised the phone to his ear.

"A friend of mine sensed a dangerous disturbance over here. Seems she was right."

His attention quickly turned to his phone as the emergency services picked up on the other end. Yuma looked back down at Yuya and frowned. He didn't have a clue what was going on or why they were attacked. What made them so special out of anyone else? The mysterious cloaked figure seemed to be trying to do away with them before they both realised something, but what?

He really didn't know, but all he did know was that they would have to watch their backs from now on.

------------------------------------------------------------

Noises that were growing closer... then a sudden bright light.

That made Yuya's head hurt.

But as his vision began gradually clearing, there seemed to be a familiar person looking over him. A girl with pink hair who was calling his name.

"Yuya. Yuya! Can you hear me?"

Yuya's mind was working incredibly slow as he looked up at the girl, who looked down with a worried expression. Did he not even recognise her?
Thankfully, after a minute or two, Yuya's mind cleared enough to remember her name.

"...Yuzu?"

Yuzu let out a sigh of relief and sat back in her chair beside Yuya's bedside.

"Yuya! Don't scare me like that!" she exclaimed. She half expected Yuya to retort back to her, but it didn't happen, he seemed incredibly out of it. Yuzu's expression softened as she slowly took hold of Yuya's hand with her own.

"...do you even remember what happened?"

Yuya remained quiet as he stared up at the ceiling. His head just felt like a mess of information and he could barely even process what Yuzu was saying to him at first. It took him a while to understand the question. What happened... what...

All of a sudden the memories of the duels and the cloaked figure rushed into his mind making him panic and try to bolt up-right in his bed, this was quickly stopped by a sharp pain through his chest which made him wince. Yuzu quickly stood up and took Yuya by the shoulders, putting a gentle force on them to make him lay back down again.

"Yuya! Don't move! Lay back down!"

Yuya did as she said and laid back on the pillow, holding the side of his chest where the pain was the worst.

"Yuma! Yuma. Is he okay? Where am I?"

"Yuya, calm down!
I haven't seen him, but Yuma is fine, he's in another room up the hall, and.. you're in the hospital."

"Hospital...?"

Yuzu nodded, grateful that Yuya seemed to be calming down.

"Yes. Apparently Yuma told the guy who saved you both to try and contact me, so he called the academy and let me know you were here."

Yuzu sat back down again, as Yuya looked back up at the ceiling.

"Yuya, what happened to you and Yuma? All I know was that you were attacked by someone."

Yuya remained silent for a bit, before responding.

"I don't really know why we were attacked, but this guy had laid out a whole trap for us. We walked right into it.
The duel was... like nothing I've ever experienced before. All the attacks felt real, but it wasn't an action duel. In fact, it felt different from that, more real, like the attacks weren't just pain, but actual damage..."
Yuya paused, before continuing, his eyes filled with fear and his voice breaking with emotion.
"... when that last attack came... I honestly thought I was going to die."

Quickly, Yuya raised his hands to his head in order to pull the goggles over his eyes but... they weren't there. Yuzu silently looked over to the small bedside table where his goggles were, as much as it pained her, she chose not to hand them over to him. She could see how confused and even scared he was over what happened but... it wasn't healthy for him to cover it up... not this time.

Yuya moved his hands slowly over his eyes, but was obviously struggling to keep himself from his growing emotions. In desperation, he suddenly let out a forced laugh, but even that wasn't enough and it soon dissolved into sobbing, which he was obviously trying to stop, but he couldn't.

"Yuya..."

Yuzu felt almost physically pained seeing her friend like this. She'd never seen him this upset or this scared before, not like this. It felt even worse that he tried to cover it up, when it was obvious he couldn't.
All she could do was be there for him, but she knew one thing.

If she ever came across the guy who did this to her best friend, she was gonna raise hell.

Outside the room, Juudai was stood by the door, leaning against the wall. He had come to check on Yuya and to ask him some questions if he was awake, but right now it sounded like Yuya just needed some time to come to terms with what happened. With that, he began walking up the corridor.
