(Non-Canon) Heartbroken
- Heartbroken -
Characters: Kotori Mizuki, Yuma Tsukumo, Yuya Sakaki, Akari Tsukumo, Haru Tsukumo
Synopsis/Notes: This event is not canon to the RP timeline and was a theoretical/exploration piece I wrote exploring the a gap between Yuzu disappearing and Yuya's Duel with Reiji just based within the RP setting. That and it just kept screaming at me to write it and also I wanted to make it sad and break people's hearts (You're welcome!).
Yuya struggles with Yuzu's disappearance and discovers she meant much more to him than he first realised.
Kotori found it difficult to sleep.
With everything that had happened it was hard to turn her mind off of things.
On top of that, the sofa was never the most comfortable place to sleep, but Yuya needed the comfort of a bed more than she did right now.
As she stared at the ceiling in the dark, she heard a shuffling sound coming from the hallway. Looking towards the door, she could see the slightest shadow passing under it, before the door to the outside was quietly opened and shut. Curiously she sat up, wondering who it could be. Was it Yuya?
She glanced down at Yuma who was sleeping on the floor by the sofa. Even though it seemed he was only sleeping lightly himself, the movement from the hallway hadn't woken him.
Silently, she grabbed Yuma's hooded jacket that was on the back of the sofa and put it on, before she carefully got up from the sofa and walked to the living room door.
Once by the front door, she opened it slightly to see Yuya was sat on the bottom of the steel steps that lead up to their door. Frowning sadly, Kotori knew what she wanted to do for him, so she closed the door and headed to the kitchen.
------------------------------
Yuya had his head resting on the metal bars of the stairway that lead up to Yuma's family's apartment, his eyes glazed over and staring off into nothing. He felt so numb, but at least outside he could feel something, even if it was the biting cold from the night.
But mostly, he had been feeling incredibly nauseous, which was the main reason he'd gone to sit outside, hoping the fresh air would chase that feeling away, but his body still felt so tired, like he couldn't even move it anymore and his eyes were heavy from all the crying he'd done earlier.
He was just exhausted.
Lost in his own thoughts, he didn't hear Kotori approaching behind him, carrying a mug and a blanket with her. She stopped for a moment, wondering if she should disturb him, before choosing to gently lower the mug down to him.
"Here." Yuya, caught in surprise, snapped his head up and looked up at Kotori, then the mug.
"It's chamomile tea." she told him. "It might help you relax a little."
Yuya paused, but then tentatively took the mug from Kotori's hands. "Thank you."
"I brought a blanket too. It's pretty cold out here."
She placed the blanket around Yuya's shoulders, pulling it around him so he was decently covered with it to protect him from the cold. She then sat down beside him.
"I'm sorry if I woke you up..." Yuya told her, not moving his eyes from the mug of tea he was holding. "...I just wasn't feeling well."
Kotori shook her head as she pulled Yuma's jacket tighter around herself in an attempt to keep warm. It was much more bigger on her more smaller frame. "Hhm. You didn't. Don't worry. I was still awake."
Silence set upon the both of them. Kotori decided that she didn't want to force Yuya to talk, but instead just sit with him and allow him to choose whether he wanted to talk about anything. Yuya sat quietly for a while, taking occasional sips from the tea which thankfully was making him feel a little better.
After a while of him staring down at his reflection in the tea, he finally decided to speak.
"It's amazing... that after someone is gone, how much there is that you regret never telling them." Kotori looked up at him to show him she was listening. "Yuzu's always been by my side through everything. She's always been the one to give me encouragement and she was always my biggest influence to get stronger along side with her. When people used to bully me about my dad, she was always right there to put a smile back on my face.
I've never really truly told her how grateful I was for that and everything she's done for me. I never told her just how important she was to me.
She's a completely irreplaceable person to me.
I just assumed that she would always continue to be there by my side. I didn't think she'd be taken away like this... I..." Yuya stopped as a slight sob escaped his mouth. In an attempt to collect himself, he covered his eyes with his hand.
Kotori took the mug of tea temporarily from Yuya, so that he didn't drop it and placed it on the step they were sitting on. Yuya instantly used his other hand to cover the rest of his face. Kotori placed a hand on his back and rubbed it slightly.
"I'm sure she knew how much you cared for her." she told him. "Sometimes words don't need to be said."
She continued to rub his back to try and help him calm down as he sat there with his head in his hands. Kotori began to realise that he wasn't just mourning the disappearance of his best friend, he was mourning the disappearance of a person who he shared a bond with that was much deeper than that. Someone who he was only just realising meant absolutely everything to him.
Kotori continued to sit with him in silence until he was calmer and ready to remove his hands from his face.
"We should go back inside." Kotori suggested. "It's becoming quite cold out here."
Yuya nodded quietly as he slowly stood to his feet along with Kotori.
Once back inside, Kotori walked him to the door of the bedroom.
"Yuya."
Yuya looked over at Kotori as he slowly opened the door to the room.
"We're all here for you. Okay?"
Yuya nodded very slightly to show that he knew, he then quietly entered the bedroom and closed the door behind himself.
As Kotori walked away, she heard Yuya slump down on the other side of the bedroom door. She turned around, ready to ask if he was okay, but she stopped herself. She couldn't be too over-bearing on him right now and there was stuff that he had to work through on his own.
With a heavy heart, she turned back and walked towards the living room.
-----------------------------
Sitting slumped by the bedroom door, Yuya slowly reached up with his hand and clutched it to his chest.
He felt like there was huge part of him missing, like there was an empty space where Yuzu should be.
He wanted to see her again. He wanted her to be by his side like always. He wanted to see her smile. He wanted to hear her laugh.
He wanted to tell her everything he just told Kotori. How important she was to him, how much she inspired him, how grateful he was to her for sticking by him, how much he enjoyed being with her.
"Yuzu, I... "
He gritted his teeth. He couldn't bring himself to finish that sentence. Not without her there to receive the words he wanted to say to her so badly.
He loved her. He'd always loved her. The feelings were right there the entire time, but he'd never noticed them.
And now it could be too late.
If Academia took her... if she was carded... he might never see her again to be able to tell her his true feelings.
With that thought lingering over and over in his mind, a stream of uncontrollable tears once again escaped his tired crimson eyes. He clenched his teeth tighter, trying to stop the sobs that wanted to come out, but it was no good.
With that, he pulled his legs to his chest and buried his face into them, finally allowing the sobbing to come through.
------------------------
When Kotori entered back into the living room, she found Yuma awake and sitting on the sofa waiting for her. He looked up with a concerned expression as she entered.
"... is he okay?"
Kotori paused for a moment, before slowly walking over to Yuma, shaking her head as she sat down beside him.
"No. He's not. All we can do right now is be there for him when he needs it." Kotori and Yuma sat in silence for a moment, before Kotori continued.
"...he's heartbroken, Yuma. He really loves her. The way he talked about her... he..." she broke off and shook her head. Yuma watched her closely. Kotori cared a lot about people, just like he did and he knew that they both were feeling hopeless to help Yuya right now.
But this situation also reminded Yuma how close he came to losing both Kotori and his family to Academia only months earlier. Had they been caught, had he lost them then, he wouldn't of known what to do.
Chances are, he would of broken down, just like Yuya was now.
But Kotori did lose her family, yet she was still being so strong for others like Yuya. Yuma really admired that so much about her.
With these thoughts in mind, he reached over and grabbed the blanket that was beside him, before wrapping it around Kotori's shoulders.
"Like you said. All we can do is support him the best we can." He told her as he adjusted the blanket. "Invaders from another dimension, losing our home - our friends - our family, this whole lancers stuff... it's all so messed up! All we can do is be there for each other."
Kotori looked up at Yuma, still looking concerned.
"Why can't this Akaba Reiji person go to the police to deal with the invaders? Why does it have to be you, Yuya and the others?"
"I don't know." Yuma replied. "And I guess we won't know more until Yuya duels him."
Kotori nodded reluctantly, knowing Yuma was right.
Eventually, she reached out to Yuma, pulling the blanket that was around her so that it was also around him. Knowing that she wanted to stay with him, Yuma pulled his legs up onto the sofa and rested his back against it, allowing Kotori to lean into him so she could rest her head against him. As she did, Yuma placed an arm around her and gently began to stroke Kotori's hair in a soothing gentle motion.
The two remained silent as Kotori listened to the rhythmic beating of Yuma's heart in his chest and the sound of his breathing. She felt comforted by those and the gentle touch of his hand on her hair.
She couldn't help but feel lucky. She still had Yuma. He was there with her. But Yuya and Yuzu had not been that lucky. Closing her eyes, she hoped that somehow, one day, the two of them could be together again.
Yuma watched Kotori as she gradually fell asleep in his arms. He leaned his head back as he too began to feel the lull of sleep coming over him. His eyes flickered as he struggled to stay awake, before they finally closed and remained shut.
----------------------------
"Is Yuya okay?" Akari commented as she glanced at the wall clock in the kitchen. "It's almost noon and he isn't up yet."
Everyone but Yuya had been up for hours. Yuma exchanged an awkward glance with Kotori, who was stood tending to some dishes she was washing up by the sink.
"It seems the boy has been through a lot recently." Haru calmly replied, as she nursed a mug of tea in her hands at the kitchen table. "We should let him rest as much as he needs."
"I'm just worried." Akari sighed. "He hasn't eaten anything since Yuma and Kotori brought him here."
"He'll come to us when he's ready." Haru told her.
"I guess so..."
-------------------------------
"Yuya. Yuya."
Yuya could hear a familiar voice ringing in his ears.
"Yuzu...?"
He opened his eyes and he found himself stood on a strange hazy grass plain. Yuzu was stood with her back to him several feet in front of him.
"Yuzu!!"
Yuzu seemed to turn around to him. She smiled and held her hand out, as if gesturing to him to come to her and hold it. With tears in his eyes, he quickly ran to her, reaching out to her with his own hand, but when he got close and tried to grab her hand with his own, she suddenly disappeared into orbs of light, which vanished soon afterwards. Yuya fell to his knees, looking at his hand that should of been holding Yuzu's. He then turned around as he heard a noise behind him, only to see a card with Yuzu's image on it hitting the floor behind him.
Waking with a start, Yuya sat up in the bed, breathing heavily, before latching a hand to his face and falling back down onto the pillow.
It was just a dream. Only a dream.
After a moment, he removed his hand from his face and looked over to the clock on the bedside table. It was just after noon.
He didn't realize he'd slept as long as he had.
Sighing, he figured he'd best make an appearance at some point. Kotori and Yuma's family had been nothing but kind and accommodating to him, allowing him to stay at their home while at his worst, he needed to at least show he was appreciative to them for that by not avoiding them.
--------------------------
When Yuya entered the kitchen, Yuma and the others turned around to look at him when he entered. He looked up and seemed a little startled by the attention at first.
"Yuya..." Yuma gave him a small smile as he pulled out the chair beside him at the table. "Here, bud. Sit down with us."
Yuya nodded silently and joined Yuma and his family at the table. He sat there quietly for a moment, before looking up at them. The stress and tiredness in his eyes was very visible.
"I just want to say... thank you... for letting me stay here."
"What are you talking about. It's fine, Yuya." Akari replied. "You're welcome here anytime. You got that?"
Yuya nodded as Kotori joined them at the table. "Are you hungry, Yuya? Akari-san and I can make you something."
Although part of him didn't feel like eating, his stomach was a completely different story. He was starving. Once again, he nodded in reply.
"Would you like anything in particular?"
Yuya shook his head. "Anything will do."
"Well then! How about Akari-san and I make you our amazing brunch surprise? You have to guess all the surprises in it though!"
Yuya looked up at them and managed to break a small smile at that. "Sounds good."
As Akari and Kotori began preparing their 'Brunch Surprise', Yuma looked over at Yuya.
"...are you still planning to duel Reiji?"
Yuya nodded. "Yes. I want him to repent for everything that's happened. For everything he lied to us about. He threw us all unknowingly into a real battle under the idea that we were testing some new city wide action duel system. He made us fight like that and... " he broke off, lowering his head slightly. "... for all those that were carded... and for Yuzu... I need to make him answer to all that he did."
Yuma raised his hand and placed it supportively on Yuya's shoulder, making the younger boy look up at him.
"Then we'll use the next few days to go through your deck to make sure you're at your 100% best to take him on!" he told him. Yuya smiled a little, grateful for Yuma's support and help.
"That's IF he survives to reach that duel!" Akari exclaimed at the kitchen counter, raising a fist in the air. "Because if I see him before then, then he'll be answering to me and my fist. Getting the both of you into such a dangerous situation like that!"
"Yuya's already tried clocking him one." Yuma replied. "The guy has reflexes like a cat or something!"
Akari seemed to growl a little.
"Well I guess I shouldn't really be encouraging violence or anything." she said as she turned back around to the food she was preparing. "But... it's a shame you didn't get to break his nose, Yuya."
As Yuma began to taunt his sister about how she'd have no chance in a fist fight against Reiji and Akari retorting that the guy looks like a scrawny nerd with chicken wing arms that'd lose in a real fight (plus his lack of socks was appalling. Who even DOES that!?), Yuya couldn't help but feel at least a little amused by their antics.
It was helping to take his mind off everything.
