- Telling the Truth -
Characters: Tomoko Kawasaki, Sayuri Kawasaki, Karou Kawasaki
Synopsis: Sayuri struggles with the decision to tell her young daughter the truth about why her father isn't around.
"Tomoko! Tomoko! Walk to daddy!"
Sayuri smiled as she watched her husband, Karou, who was crouched down opposite her, hold out his arms towards his young daughter, who had only just turned a year old. The weather was nice, so the couple had decided to take their daughter to a nearby park. She was only just starting to learn how to walk, so they had been trying to encourage her to do so.
Sayuri soon let go of her daughter once she seemed stable on her feet and watched her as slowly but surely, she began to toddle towards her father. It almost looked like she was going to make it when all of a sudden the baby faltered and lost her balance, taking a small tumble onto the floor, resulting in her bursting out into tears.
Smiling, Karou stood up and walked over to his daughter.
"Well you almost made it" he said to her as he picked her up slowly, he then playfully held her up in the air. "Haha, you'll make it one day, Tomoko! No need to be sad!"
Tomoko's crying gradually faded as she looked down at her father's smiling face and started to giggle. Smiling, Sayuri watched them from where she was sat. Never a day passed when she wasn't grateful for her husband and her daughter, the two most important people in her life and the two she felt she could never live without...
----------------------
Sayuri stared down sadly at the cup of tea she had placed in front of her, as she sat in the kitchen area of Sakana. It was memories like those that made her both happy and sad, but also reminded her that she would never again have memories like that with the person she loved more than anything, other than her daughter.
She still hadn't told Tomoko the truth.
In a few months, Tomoko was going to be five-years-old and it just seemed the more older she grew, the more inquisitive she became. She had been asking about her father a lot over the last few weeks... it wasn't fair to her to keep the truth from her any longer... it wasn't right to lie in the first place.
"Mommy, can you get me a drink, please?"
Sayuri's eyes looked over to see Tomoko stood beside her, she hadn't even noticed she had walked in.
"A-ah, yes, sure"
Sayuri stood up and went over to the fridge in order to get the juice from it. As she poured out the drink into a glass in silence, Tomoko watched curiously.
"Is something wrong, Mommy? You look sad..."
Sayuri stopped what she was doing and looked over to her daughter. Sighing, she picked up the glass of juice and handed it to her.
"Tomoko, honey... I need to talk to you about something"
"About what...?"
Sayuri paused and then sat back down on the chair she was sitting on before.
"It's... about your father--"
Tomoko's eyes instantly lit up. "Is he coming home??"
"No... honey, he's not"
Tomoko's look of instant disappointment made Sayuri's heart sink.
"Tomoko, he... he's not coming home and he never will"
"What do you mean, mommy?? He's daddy so he'll come home!"
Sayuri shook her head slowly.
"He... won't be coming home because... he died... a long time ago.."
Tomoko's expression gradually shifted from one of disappointment to one of shock. "...what..."
"I'm... sorry, Tomoko. I shouldn't of lied to you all this time, I just..."
"Daddy's dead...?"
Sayuri just nodded slowly, but she could see the tears welling in up in Tomoko's eyes as she began to step back from her mother.
"No... he's not dead, daddy's not dead... he's not dead!! He was going to come home and bring me lotsa presents back and we could be mommy, daddy and Tomoko again!!"
"Tomoko... I'm sorry..."
It broke Sayuri's heart to see her daughter looking so angry, frustrated and upset with her. Eventually she tried to move forward to give Tomoko a hug, but Tomoko moved away before she could.
"Tomoko..."
"Leave me alone!! You're lying! Daddy's alive and I'll find him!!"
With that, Tomoko dropped her glass of juice and as it shattered on the floor, she bolted out of the kitchen door.
"T-Tomoko! Come back!!"
Sayuri ran off after her, only quick enough to see her disappearing around a corner near to the exit of the apartment building. Sayuri followed, but when she got to the exit, she couldn't see any sign of her daughter out on the busy street outside.
"Tomoko! Tomoko!"
As Sayuri ran off onto the street, assuming her daughter ran outside somewhere, she was unaware of a small doorway just before the exit of the apartments, which lead into a storage room.
Inside was Tomoko, holding her legs to her chest with tears pouring from her eyes. All she had really felt like doing was hiding and this was the first hiding place she could find. The door had been slightly open, someone had forgotten to close it, so Tomoko had ran inside there and stayed as quiet as she could until she couldn't hear her mother's voice any longer.
It was then that Tomoko started sobbing quietly to herself.
