- The Message -
Characters: Yuma Tsukumo, Kotori Mizuki
Synopsis: Kotori delivers a message to Yuma from Alex.
It had been pretty difficult for Kotori to see Yuya and Yuzu laying motionless in their beds in the infirmary, where only the slight rising and falling of their chests as they breathed gave any indication that they were alive. Even more difficult to see was Yuma's reaction upon entering the room. He was barely able to even look at them, which told Kotori that he still harboured a lot of guilt about what happened to them.
She asked the nurse on duty if she could find her a couple of vases for the flowers she had brought and once she had them, she arranged the flowers on each of their bedside tables. It didn't really feel like it brightened up the mood in the room all that much like she'd hoped.
She sat with them both, and talked to them, telling them how grateful she was to them and how she'd hoped that she could of spent time with them alongside Yuma, just hanging out and getting to know them more. All the while, Yuma stood by her side silently, looking down at his friends with a forlorn expression. Every now and then, Kotori looked up at him and she could see he had tears in his eyes.
It was heartbreaking.
After they left, the two of them headed down to the beach where they sat together for a bit. All the while, Kotori had Alexandra's message running around in her head. As much as she didn't want to put Yuma through more than what he'd already been through, she had to deliver her message.
Pulling her legs to her chest, she took in a deep breath to begin.
"Yuma. I have something I need to tell you. A message I need to give actually." Yuma looked over at her curiously. "It's from Alexandra."
Yuma's eyes widened as he heard Kotori speak Alexandra's name.
"She contacted you?"
"She confronted me earlier, as I was walking to the hotel."
Kotori saw Yuma's expression change from surprise to slight panic.
"No, no, it's okay." Kotori continued, reassuring him. "She didn't do anything to me and she doesn't plan to. She just wanted me to pass on a message."
"What message?" Yuma questioned.
"She told me about what she did to Yuya and Yuzu. She said that she took almost all of their life energy and that it's not something their bodies can regain naturally. She told me that even though they'll eventually wake up, unless the energy she took is returned, they'll remain weak.
She wanted to make a deal with you. She said if you gave up your Numbers, she'd return the energy and be on her way, but she also said if you chose to duel her, she'd still return their energy, even if you lost... but she won't spare you. She wants you to get back to her with a time and place of your choice.
She also told me to tell you that if you told the teachers or Juudai-san, then the deal is off."
Yuma listened to Kotori's words carefully and quietly. It seemed like Alexandra was giving him the chance to approach her. He was glad that either way it sounded like Yuya and Yuzu could be helped, but...
Standing up, Yuma looked out towards the horizon over the ocean. One hand was clutching at his pendent and the other was in a fist by his side. Kotori watched him closely. She could see that the hand by Yuma's side was shaking a little, half from frustration and maybe half from fear. His knuckles were turning white because of how tightly he was holding his hand in the fist.
Slowly, Kotori stood up beside him and took Yuma's hand in her own, holding it tenderly. Yuma looked down as he felt Kotori's gentle touch and gradually, his hand relaxed next to it, allowing Kotori to thread her fingers between his.
"You'll be choosing to duel her, right?"
Kotori didn't really need to ask, she already knew the answer.
"I know Yuya and Yuzu are in a bad way right now, but their lives aren't in danger. I know you like to rush into things but, please, give yourself time to think this through and prepare yourself, so you can duel her with your full strength."
Yuma hesitated, but then nodded in agreement with her.
She was right. This was not a situation he should be rushing into. He needed to think about this, he needed to prepare himself and his deck if he was going to have any chance in winning against her.
"Do you really think she can be 'saved'?" Kotori pondered quietly. "She seemed pretty sure that she's doing the right thing."
"Yeah, I'm absolutely sure." Yuma replied. "When you duel someone, your hearts connect. Dueling her earlier in the week felt completely different to me than dueling her in the expulsion match. I feel the Alexandra I dueled back then was the true Alexandra and that's the Alexandra I want to help."
Kotori leaned into Yuma slightly as her hand held Yuma's more firmly then before.
"I hope you're right."
Yuma looked down at Kotori, before moving his gaze back up towards the horizon over the ocean with a determined glare.
No matter what, he was going to do his best to save his friends, including Alexandra and protect the Numbers he'd formed a bond with.
