- How to Train Your Kuriboh -

Characters: Yuya Sakaki, Juudai Yuuki, Tomoko Kawasaki
Synopsis: Yuya goes to SAI to try and train his new Kuriboh. In the process, he learns more about the spirit sense ability that he has.

It was a few days before the New Year and Yuya found himself walking into the lobby of the SAI building in Domino City. He'd contacted Juudai about his new Kuriboh and had been invited to come and see him.
No sooner had he entered the building, Juudai came to great him.

"Hey Yuya! It's great to see you!"

Yuya smiled as he gave a wave in response. "It's great to see you too! I'm really glad you agreed to see me at such short notice."

"So, you said you had a problem with your-- oh." Juudai seemed to look at something behind Yuya. "I... see the issue."

"Wait... what...?" Yuya shot Juudai a puzzled look, before following his gaze, looking around to see Kuriborder eating a string of decorative lights that were on a small potted tree stood by the entrance, almost like it was spaghetti.

"A-Ah! Kuriborder! Don't eat the lights!" Yuya dived to grab hold of the Kuriboh, but only managed to grab it as it was finishing off it's meal. "Urgh... sorry about that."

Thankfully, Juudai, although taken back, seemed a little amused. "I guess it really likes to eat lights."

"Christmas decorations too... and New Years decorations..." Yuya added on. "Just anything that's lit up or sparkly. I need to train him out of it or something and figured you'd be the best to ask, since you've got a Winged Kuriboh."

"Train it...?" Juudai rubbed his head a little, as Winged Kuriboh appeared beside him. "Well, I never really had to 'train' Winged Kuriboh, but, I do know someone who might be able to help."

------------------------------------------------

Not too long after, Yuya found himself being lead by Juudai to the Spirit House.
Once inside, Juudai looked around, and quickly found who he was looking for, someone Yuya happened to recognise.

"Tomoko?"

Tomoko looked up from what she was doing and greeted the two of them with a huge cheerful smile.

"Oh hey! Yuya and big brother Juudai!"

"Hey, Tomoko!" Juudai replied. "I was wondering if you could help us. Yuya needs to do some training with his Kuriborder."

"Oh, sure! What kind of training do we need to do?"

Almost as if on command, Kuriborder escaped from Yuya's arms, instantly flying over to more decorative lights on some of the trees and began eating them, despite Juudai's Winged Kuriboh flying up and trying to stop it.

"I need to train it to stop eating anything that's bright... and sparkly."

"Ooooh, I see." Tomoko stood still for a moment while thinking, before her eyes lit up with an idea. "Okay! I need some treats and some GLITTER! I'll be a moment, so wait here for me, okay?"

Before anybody could reply, she quickly bounded out of the Spirit House.

Letting out an amused chuckle, Juudai walked over to some rocks that were nearby, and sat down, signalling for Yuya to join him.

"Guess we have no choice but to wait for her."

Yuya sat down beside Juudai and glanced around the area.
He always found the Spirit House to be something amazing and really beautiful. It was almost like a whole other world in an incredibly large greenhouse like structure. It was also quite a relaxing place, seeing the small animal-like spirits going about their lives.

"It's always so pleasant here." he commented. "I remember really enjoying the time we spent in here during the whole New Horizons stuff."

Juudai glanced over at him, remembering something.

"You have spirit sight, correct?"

Yuya looked a little puzzled. "Spirit sight?"

"I remember Ruka mentioning it. That during one of the sessions here, you heard the weak call of a spirit that nobody else heard, other than Ruka herself."

"I'd... completely forgotten about that." Yuya replied. He remembered hearing the call and finding a card containing the spirit of a Cloudian Smoke Ball on the street, just outside the Spirit House.
But it wasn't just him who had this ability, his brother's did too. They all had a special bond with their dragons, after all, but his memory on how he knew this seemed hazy...

"Me and my brothers all have that ability because..."

Yuya's sentence trailed off as his eyes widened in a sudden realisation. Something he had only just remembered that had come back to him.

"... because Zarc had that ability too."

This had been happening a lot since his duel with Reira. Since the truth about what happened had come out. He'd gradually been getting flashes of random memories coming back to him.
Juudai watched as a troubled and confused look appeared on the boy's face.
He knew what had just happened. He'd seen Yuya's duel with Reira, he knew that there had been memories hidden from them, which were now gradually coming back... even to himself.

"It's been a bit rough, huh? With the memories coming back, I mean."

Yuya glanced over at Juudai, not really knowing how to reply at first, so he gave him a slow nod.

"It's been kinda hard to know what to really do, y'know. I've just been trying to carry on with my life how it is and not really thinking about it, but..." he gave out a sigh. "... I've seen how it's been affecting others. How it's been affecting my brothers.
Yuri went completely missing, Yugo’s been looking for him every chance he gets and Yuto's just been so closed off lately. I've barely seen him or even spoke to him.
It's like everything is falling apart and I'm sat around trying to pretend like it's not."

Juudai carefully listened to Yuya's words. It seemed like he was struggling a bit more than he cared to admit... until now, at least.

"Everyone deals with things in their own way. Sometimes they need the space to think things through or time to allow things to pass. I guess all you can do is give them time and to be there for them when they need you to be.
But you need to give yourself time too and maybe talk about the things that are bothering you to someone, rather than hiding them. Kinda like you're doing now.
I know it can be hard though, especially when you're trying to be the strength for everyone else."

Yuya took a silent moment to think.

"I guess I can always talk to Yuzu about this too. I mean, I'm sure she's going through her own stuff with this, but she's also managing to just... carry on."

Looking back at Juudai, a small grateful smile appeared on Yuya's face.

"Thanks. For letting me vent a little."

Returning the smile, Juudai placed a hand on the boy's shoulder. "It's no problem, Yuya. I know it can be tough and I kinda learned a lot of this stuff the hard way. To trust my friends, trust myself and I guess be kinder to myself. All that stuff. Not saying things won't ever be difficult, but one of the reasons SAI exists is to try and give advice and guidance to those with supernatural abilities, something those of us years ago didn't have.
You, Yuma and any of you are free to come to me or SAI in general anytime."

Before anything else could be said between the two, Tomoko returned holding up the items she had gone to get.

"I've returned with treats and glitter! I'm ready to train!"

Juudai jumped off the rocks, landing on the path, followed by Yuya.

"And I guess talking of supernatural abilities, I can help train you a little in those, as you train Kuriborder."

"Wait..." Yuya pointed to himself, looking a little puzzled. "...train me?"

Juudai gave him a nod. "This isn't just about you training and teaching Kuriborder about our world and the do's and don'ts, but also training yourself to be open to the spirits. Learning about them, letting them learn about you and really building bonds with them.
Everyone can see spirits here in Domino and the surrounding areas, but those of us with the spirit sight ability can really communicate with them on a different level.
But, it can also make you sensitive to their energy and feelings, so it's also important to learn how to not get too overwhelmed with their presence."

Yuya thought on those words for a moment, eventually pulling out a card from the deck holster he had with him.

Odd-Eyes Pendulum Dragon.

Zarc had been able to hear the dragons that he and his brothers were now the holders of, just like how they could now. Each of them had a unique bond with that dragon, as he assumed Zarc had originally... but Zarc's mind had gotten clouded by his audiences jeers and want for more exciting duels and by his own desire to be the strongest duelist, to the point where he began to hurt people. His dragons, they began to loathe humanity, holding a grudge about how they were being used. This ended up being a recipe for disaster which resulted in Zarc and the dragons fusing as one terrifying being... Supreme King Dragon Zarc.

Zarc's soul was at peace now though, as were the dragons, but Yuya realised that he and his brothers needed to learn the extent of the ability they'd inherited from once being the fragmented souls of Zarc himself. The ability to communicate with spirits. The ability to communicate with these dragons. The ability to understand them and their feelings.

Looking back up and over to Juudai, his expression became a more determined one.

"Then I want to learn this, but, how do I even start?"

"Ah, well..." Juudai rubbed the back of his head, which indicated that maybe he hadn't really thought through the 'process' of this training as much as he let on. "... I guess we can start with opening up your senses more to the spirits, then learning to manage them."

Almost as if knowing that Yuya's next question was going to be how he'd 'open up his senses', Juudai answered him.

"Relax and close your eyes."

Giving him a nod, Yuya followed Juudai's instructions.

"Now. Tell me what you can feel."

Yuya took a deep and slow breath, in and out, as he attempted to relax and just let himself open up to whatever he could feel around him.
At first, he couldn't really feel anything, and he began to wonder if he really could do this, but then gradually, one by one, he began to sense the things around him.

"The spirits. I can sense them. All of them! It's like... I can sense their energy in the building. It's almost like I can... communicate with them here."

Yuya could tell, even with his eyes closed, where each spirit he was picking up on was within the Spirit House. It was like a private void where he could be aware of them and they could be aware of him, on an almost... spiritual scale? Yuya wasn't really sure how to explain it.
Then he felt the presence of two particular spirits by his side. One was Kuriborder and the other was Odd-Eyes. Them, along with the other spirits, seemed perfectly calm with his presence.
The whole experience seemed kind of uplifting.

Upon opening his eyes, Yuya saw Juudai smiling proudly at him, before he looked down and noticed a few of the Spirits had nestled themselves at his feet, as if they'd been drawn to him, Kuriborder included.

"Spirits might naturally gravitate towards someone with an ability like what we have, depending on how much they can pick up on it." Juudai explained. "Tomoko, for example, tends to find spirits gravitate towards her a lot, probably because it works hand-in-hand with her empathic abilities."

"Hmm-mmm!" Tomoko nodded in agreement. "But it also means I can help spirits who are lost and are looking for guidance or a safe place to be and I can usually tell exactly what they want. I guess that's why I'm able to train the little ones here so well too."

With a warm smile, Yuya knelt down so he could pet Kuriborder and the other spirits.
"Working with spirits must be a pretty awesome job."

"It can be." Juudai replied. "But not every spirit you connect with will be like these here. Just like with people, there are kind spirits and... not so kind spirits and those can be the ones that may take advantage of someone with our ability. Some of these spirits you might be able to help, but some... just won't want the help.
You just need to be aware of those kinds of situations, and learn how to deal with them, which I'm happy to help you, and even your brothers, with."

"And I'm happy to help with any training!" Tomoko added on, as she held out her hand to show Yuya the biscuit treats she'd brought back, which now had glitter sprinkled over them. "Nice and shiny, just how Kuriborder likes them! You can use them as a training aide to teach him to focus more on you and less on the sparkly things you don't want him to eat."

Standing back up, Yuya carefully reached out and took the treats from Tomoko's hand to look at them.

"Thank you. Both of you! I really appreciate all of this."

"It's no problem, Yuya." Juudai responded. "It's what SAI is here for."

There was a lot more to this ability than Yuya first thought, but he was grateful that there were others who could guide him and teach him the things he never would of thought of.

He spent a while longer at the Spirit House, as Tomoko showed him a few training tips that he had to admit, was actually similar to training a regular animal, though he appreciated the knowledge as he didn't know much on training animals or spirits.

It was already dark by the time he left. The cold of the winter's night biting at his face as he began his walk towards the station to begin his short journey back to Maiami City.
While walking along, with Kuriborder closely following behind him, Yuya looked up at the clear night sky.
He still carried worries over his three brothers, but today had helped him to really become more at peace with who he was... and who he had been. He didn't doubt that he'd still get flashbacks of what happened over time as the rest of his memories returned, but now he felt he could face it all with a renewed spirit.

He could only hope he could help his brothers do the same.
