- Late Night Call -
Characters: Yuma Tsukumo, Yuya Sakaki
Synopsis: Yuma and Yuya have a late night discussion.
It had been a week since the Wonder Quartet and a week since Kotori had gone missing.
During this time, Yuma had spent most of it planning out ideas with Alex, who had been temporarily staying with the Tsukumos in their apartment.
It was honestly the only thing that had been keeping his mind off Kotori.
But at night, that was a different story.
Yuma hadn't been able to sleep in the bed in their bedroom at all. He'd tried, but he found it was there where he was reminded of Kotori the most. He'd gotten so used to her sleeping beside him every night, it felt wrong that she wasn't there.
Eventually, Yuma had taken to just trying to sleep in the hammock he had set up in their room, but he found even there his mind just kept wandering into places he didn't want it to go. He'd wonder what really happened to her, if she was alive, if she was scared and alone somewhere, or if Academia really did card her.
Glancing around the room didn't help either. All he could see were things that reminded him of her, like her unfinished fashion design projects on the desk.
This was the struggle every night, and this night had been no different, as he laid in the hammock, staring up at the ceiling.
Suddenly, a sound ringing out from his duel disk broke Yuma's thoughts and the silence of the room. He quickly looked over at it, puzzled at who would be calling him at this hour.
He was even more surprised when he saw the contact name that was displaying on the screen.
[YUYA : CALLING]
Yuma quickly sat up and jumped down from the hammock and scooped up the duel disk to answer it. When he did, a small holographic screen popped up, showing Yuya, who looked almost as baffled that Yuma had even answered.
"Yuya..."
Yuya didn't reply straight away, he seemed a bit stunned and it was obvious he had called but didn't actually have an idea of why he was even calling. Yuma could also tell by the ragged look on his face that he hadn't really slept much himself this last week either.
"I... probably woke you..." Yuya began, his voice wavering a little. "I shouldn't have called his late, I..."
"Hey, bud, it's okay! You didn't wake me!" Yuma replied back, reassuring his friend as he sat down on the edge of the bed. "I wasn't asleep."
Yuya remained silent for a moment, but he seemed to relax at knowing he didn't disturb his friend.
After a moment, he spoke up again.
"I read about what happened to Kotori. I'm sorry."
Yuma's face fell a little as he said that.
"Yeah. I guess we're in a similar boat, with Kotori... and Yuzu... but, we'll find them, Yuya. I know we'll find them both!"
Although Yuya's face was saddened, he replied with a nod.
"Actually... there's something I need to tell you, Yuya."
Yuya glanced curiously at his friend on the screen. Yuma paused as he took a deep breath. He hadn't been looking forward to telling Yuya this, but, he knew he had to.
"I'm not going with the Lancers."
Yuya's eyes widened a little with surprise.
"Alex and I we... we want to be there for you and help support you, but, we just can't bring ourselves to trust Akaba Reiji enough to follow him. We want to fight Academia our own way."
Yuya listened to Yuma's words. He took a moment to think on them, before giving out a heavy breath.
"I understand, Yuma. I don't trust him either but... I have to go with him so I can find Yuzu."
Yuma felt relieved that Yuya had taken that well.
"Even though we'll be going our separate ways, I promise, if I happen to come across Yuzu wherever I end up. I'll make sure she's okay!"
Yuya nodded in agreement. "And if I find Kotori, I'll do the same."
The two boys gave each other small smiles, both reassured, knowing that even though they'll be going separate paths, they'll both be looking out for each other.
They continued talking for a while after that and before they knew it, they both found themselves fighting to stay awake, so they decided the call should end there, wishing each other good luck as they did.
Yuma slowly placed the duel disk down on the bedside table and just leaned back on the bed. He was much too tired to even attempt to climb back into the hammock, so instead, he just curled up on the bed and closed his eyes, allowing himself to gradually fall to sleep.
