- Haunted Memories - Part 3: Familial Bonds -

Characters: Yuto Sakaki, Yuya Sakaki, Yoko Sakaki, Kotori Mizuki
Synopsis: Yuto reconnects with his family.

It was the same as always.
People run in panic. The soldiers of Academia stormed the streets turning those around him into cards which fall to the ground. The giant Ancient Gear Golems tower above the ruined city, shooting at the buildings.
Explosions. Screams. Everything sounds around him.

Yuto fights and fights. He protects who he can.
But this is hell. It's a living hell.

All of a sudden, he's cornered. He desperately looks for an escape route, but he has nowhere to run.
He readies himself to fight. The flames of anger in his eyes, but as he takes a step back, the floor underneath him gives way and he falls.

Hitting what felt like water, he found himself slowly sinking into a dark abyss. The anger he felt just melted away, but what replaced it was a feeling of emptiness.
Numbness.
He was so tired. Exhausted from this battle.
Maybe he should just give up.

He closed his eyes, ready to accept whatever fate had in store for him, when he heard a faint voice calling out to him. A voice he recognised.

"Yuya...?"

Opening his eyes again, he couldn't see anything, but the voice seemed to get a little clearer.

"Yuto...! Yuto...!"

He sounded worried.
There was a silence for a moment, before Yuya spoke again. More softly this time.

"Yuto... I know things are really difficult right now. But... I'm here and I'm not going anywhere. I'm staying here until you're ready to wake up.
I'll be right here..."

Yuto listened to the words Yuya spoke that echoed around him.
Yuya was here with him?
Somehow, he found the strength to reach out his hand in front of him, as if reaching out to Yuya. Suddenly, from the dark ahead of him, an arm reached out and grabbed his, beginning to pull him up. The water of the dark abyss rushed past him as he heard Yuya calling out to him again, this time the voice getting closer and closer the more he was pulled up.

Then there was a bright light.

His eyes flickering open, the first thing Yuto saw was Yuya looking over him with a worried expression, which quickly changed to one of relief.

"You're awake!"

"Yuya...?" Yuto's eyes still felt heavy and his head felt clouded. Blinking a few more times, Yuto glanced around the room he was in.
He didn't recognise it.

"Where...?"

"It's Yuma and Kotori's apartment. They took you in last night after you passed out."

Yuto gave out a heavy breath as he remembered the events of the night before. He then slowly began to sit up. As he did, his eyes caught sight of a small black book that was on the floor by Yuya, which he recognised as his writing book.

"A-ah. I'm sorry!" Yuya apologised. "I normally wouldn't look at your writing stuff without permission but... you disappeared.
I don't even know why I even brought it here with me."

Thankfully, Yuto didn't seem angry that Yuya had looked at the book. If anything, his expression seemed saddened. The last few weeks or so had really been a blur, but he knew what he'd written wouldn't of been a pleasure to read through.

"Yuto. I know you're struggling right now. I guess the book showed me just how much you are suffering, but, I just..." Yuya began tearing up as he struggled to get out what he wanted to say. "... I just wanted you to know that I'm here. And even if you don't think of me as a brother, I still see you as one. I always will, I..."

Breaking down more, he leaned forward, resting his head against Yuto's chest.

"...I just don't want to lose you. I don't want to lose my brothers. I don't want this to tear us apart."

Yuto silently looked down at Yuya with sorrowful, tired eyes as his heart broke.
The words Kotori had said to him the night before echoed in his mind.

"No matter what ... you now have a family that loves you, Yuto. I think that's what you need to focus on, rather than the past you're trying to run from."

Slowly, Yuto raised his arms and placed them around Yuya, pulling him into a gentle hug. Yuto didn't tend to be the type to be physically affectionate often, so at first Yuya was suprised by the gesture.

"I'm sorry, Yuya." Yuto spoke. "I'm sorry I worried you and everyone else. I'm sorry that you had to read all those things I'd written down. I'm just... sorry.
We're brothers, Yuya. We'll always be brothers. I was wrong to question that."

The two brothers sat in silence for a moment, allowing Yuya to calm down and Yuto to silently comfort him.
Eventually, Yuya sat back up straight, wiping tears from his eyes as he did.

"So, you'll come back home?"

Yuto gave Yuya a small smile and a nod. "Yeah. Of course."

Yuya seemed pleased with that answer, giving Yuto a small smile back.

Just then, a small knock at the door sounded, before Kotori peered in. She was glad to see that Yuto was finally awake.

"I've made some breakfast for all of us, if you'd like it."

Yuto hadn't realised how hungry he actually was. He'd been roaming the streets of Domino the last few days and hadn't really eaten much in that time.

"Yeah. I think we'd like that." Kotori was about to leave when Yuto's voice stopped her. "And, thank you. For talking to me last night and for... letting me stay."

"It's okay, Yuto. No matter what, you and Yuya are welcome here anytime."

----

Later that day, back at his home in Maiami City, Yuto was sat at the kitchen table nursing a cup of green tea he'd made himself. As he did, the door to the house opened and Yoko came through the door, carrying a couple of grocery bags. Laying eyes on Yuto at the table, she gave him a smile as she placed the bags on the kitchen counter.

"You're home. You had us all pretty worried, you know."

Yuto looked away slightly and shuffled uncomfortably where he was sat. "I know. I apologise. I just--"

"Needed to get out to clear your head for a while?"

Yuto gave a small nod. "Yeah. Something like that."

Noticing that he was too ashamed to make eye contact with her, she walked over to the table, pulling out a chair to sit opposite him.

"Are you okay?"

This made him look up at her slightly. "Well, better than I was."

Giving him a warm smile, she reached out and gently placed her hands over his, that were still holding the mug of tea on the table.

"It's alright to not be okay, Yuto and it's okay for you to talk to us if you're not feeling your greatest. You can reach out to me, or your brothers. I know what you're going through is confusing and terrifying, but we'll find ways to work through it together and if you feel you need any extra help to overcome what you're going through right now, we can arrange it."

She paused for a moment before continuing.

"I know about the photos and how they don't match up. You're not the only one who's been getting rather conflicting memories, after all."
She noticed the surprise in Yuto's face, as well as the slight concern. She'd had memories return to?

"But no matter what, as far as I'm concerned, I raised four incredible boys and those are the memories I'll choose to cherish."

Yuto's expression changed to one of gratefulness and relief. Even though she'd been getting some conflicting memories of her own, maybe remembering times where she only had Yuya as a son, she decided to focus on the memories of all four of them.
Seeing that Yuto was a little more relaxed now, she moved her hands away from his, before a slight mischievous look appeared on her face.

"When we finally have the whole family together again, including your father, I'm planning to hire a photographer to take some photos of us all together."

Yuto actually let out a small amused chuckle at that idea. "I think it'd be great."

Smiling, Yoko stood up from where she was sat. "You should get some rest. I'll call you when dinner is ready."

"Actually, mom?" Yoko looked back at Yuto. "I'd like to help you prepare dinner."

"Are you sure you're up to that?" she questioned, but Yuto responded with a nod.

"I think I'd prefer the distraction right now and..." he paused, a warm smile appearing his face. "... I enjoy us cooking together."

Yoko couldn't help but feel happy to hear that, even though she already knew Yuto enjoyed the time they spent cooking together.

"Alright then." she responded. "Finish your tea and we'll discuss what we should make."
